Internal Family Systems (IFS) A.K.A. Parts Therapy

Internal Family Systems (IFS), also called parts therapy, is one of my favorites and we will most likely use some aspects of it. The concept is that we have different parts of us that each plays a role, and sometimes one part takes over in the wrong situation - which causes anxiety and lack of growth.

IFS is helpful for people who:

  • Say, “But that’s just the way I am,” while they know the way they respond to things is self-destructive.

  • Feel like they are not the one steering the ship, more like an observer going, “Why the hell did I do that?”

  • Are held back by fear and anxiety, unable to take that leap because part of them won’t allow it.

  • Don’t feel like they are really themselves or a complete person.

  • Seem to turn into a scared child in some situations or lose faith in themselves.
